Fantasy Football

There are many newspaper and on-line fantasy leagues available based around Premiership players. You can find a good selection here

Although they all differ slightly, they basically follow the same pattern. Each contestant acts as a manager selecting a squad of players to a limited budget with a mix of players by position required. Within this squad, a team is selected prior to each match. A - possibly limited - number of transfers are allowed in a season

Each player's performance in the real games is assessed. For the most basic competitions points are given for factors such as appearing in a game, scoring or not conceding a goal and taken away for cautions. More sophisticated systems take into account assists, missed penalties even taking account of misplaced passes and winning tackles.

Although the player rankings thus differ between the competitions, the variation is relatively small with players such as Owen and Henry leading the strikers Beckham the midfielders etc. Of course these are the most expensive players and the strategy is to obtain the best blend of players within the allowed budget whilst watching out tactically for players who may have been misdesignated by position or who will be out for a particular match due to injuries or suspension

TPL, the on-line version of the Daily Telegraph, is both one of the most popular versions and one with a middling degree of scoring complexity. It thus serves as a useful model for all competitions. Tables of performance by position can be 'drilled-down' to an individual's performance over the years
