Go Figure - 23rd September 2003

The most disappointing team of the season to date have been Newcastle, yet to garner a win in five attempts including three home fixtures and away trips at fellow-strugglers Leeds and Everton. With a trip to Highbury upcoming, it is only a Wolves side currently mired in a 469 minute goalless streak that is keeping them from the worst start in the division this season

As can be seen from the adjoining table, the slowest starter normally ends up in trouble, in five of the eleven years resulting in relegation

However, even if Wolves should obtain a victory before Newcastle, the Geordies appear to have too much talent to flirt with relegation, and should match the Villa 1997/8 and West Ham 2001/2 sides by finishing in the top half of the table. However, of the 17 teams that have started without a victory in the first half dozen games of a Premiership season, only Sheffield Wednesday in 1993/4 finished higher than tenth so they had better get off the mark quickly

Go Figure    20-21 September
Aston Villa 2–1 Charlton Athletic
Alpay Ozalan scores his debut goal on his 56th appearance. The all-time Premiership record was also set by a player in Villa colours as Peter Schmeichel broke his drought in his 260th match
Fulham 2–2 Manchester City
After just half-a-dozen games, Fulham and Man City are two of only four teams to have scored in every game. Last season, Arsenal (16) and Liverpool (12) led the way before they suffered a shut-out
Leeds United 0–2 Birmingham City
Some debatable decisions by referee Gallagher ended the 15 match run of unbeaten games for Leeds in which he officiated. However, with an average of 2.08 points per game he can still be regarded as their lucky ref
Liverpool 2–1 Leicester City
Owen finally gets his 50th assist in his 193rd match, placing him the ninth slowest - but fifth youngest - of the 52 players who have achieved that plateau
Manchester United 0–0 Arsenal
With his eighth Premiership dismissal, Patrik Viera now heads this category replacing a record set by Vinnie Jones more than seven years ago
Middlesbrough 1–0 Everton
Watson and Rooney each pick up their league-leading fourth cautions of the season
Newcastle United 0–0 Bolton Wanderers
After four one-goal defeats at St James's, Bolton's point underlines Newcastle's problems. More...
Portsmouth 1–2 Blackburn Rovers
Portsmouth become the35th Premiership club Andy Cole has scored against, a Premiership record. The three teams to have avoided his poaching skills are Birmingham (2 apps), West Brom(1) and Swindon(2)
Tottenham Hotspur 1–3 Southampton
No surprise that Hoddle gets the push as Spurs lose at home to Southampton for the first time in nine matches and concede three goals for the third match in succession. Only Chelsea of the Premiership ever-presents have previously had such a depressing run, in April 1997
Wolverhampton Wanderers 0–5 Chelsea
So far so good for Chelsea as they lead the table in goals(15), assists(20) and have incurred the fewest cautions (5Y 1R)
