Go Figure - 23rd April 2001

Coventry City's extended period in the top flight appears likely to end this season. However, if they were to win their final three games one of four teams which need at least three points to escape might still be in danger

The good news for Coventry is that this is acheivable and often by sides at the wrong end of the table. The bad news is that, for all their much-mentioned last minute escapes, during the premiership years they have only once won their last game of the season: almost a certain requirement for survival.

Unsurprisingly, as the Table shows, Manchester United hold the record for both best run-in and most three-win close outs to the season On no occasion did the last three games affect their final position, although in 1995/6 they were neck and neck with Newcastle coming to the final games.

In 1998/9 the two achievers were both in relegation position as the season drew to a close. Nottingham Forest were already destined for bottom place but Southampton's victories enabled them to overtake both Charlton and Blackburn with a game to spare

The most dramatic occurence, however, was in the inaugural Premier League season. Relegation-threatened Oldham and Sheffield United both treated their fans to a grandstand finale. The fall-guys were Crystal Palace. In spite of a creditable win and draw, they lost out on goal difference and were relegated with 49 points from 42 games, only 10 points in arrears of sixth-placed Liverpool

Go Figure    21st-22nd April
Arsenal 4–1 Everton
Unless either Parlour or Pires starts each of the last four games, Arsenal are on the brink of being the only team not to have had a 30-game starter in either of the past two seasons
Aston Villa 0–0 Southampton
Beattie's spell as a top striker may have come and gone. Apart from scoring a goal a game for ten games in November and December, he has just hit the target once in 21 other appearances this year.
Bradford City 2–0 Derby County
In spite of his brace of goals, at 30, Ashley Ward is unlikely to be playing Premiership soccer next year. However, he is the only player to have played for five different Premiership teams and scored for each of them. (Stan Collymore played for six but did not score whilst at Crystal Palace in 1992/3)
Chelsea 0–1 Charlton Athletic
Chelsea's winning streak ends at four. Unlike 18 of the 33 teams who have played in the Premier League they have never managed a run of five consecutive victories. Of the ever-presents, only Everton match them in this regard
Ipswich Town 2–0 Coventry City
Coventry may need to win their last three games to stay up and it has been done before More...
Leicester City 0–3 Middlesbrough
Leicester join five other teams that have suffered eight consecutive losses in a Premier League season. Of the other teams, only Middlesbrough managed to avoid relegation - and they went down the following year
Liverpool 3–1 Tottenham Hotspur
Another game without both Owen and Fowler starting, another victory. Liverpool have only won of the last eleven premiership games they have both commenced
Manchester United 1–1 Manchester City
Roy Keane's inability to accept a poor result led to his first dismissal in a season in which he has shown more restraint than usual. He and David Batty joined the 5 red, 50 yellow club on the same day.
Sunderland 1–1 Newcastle United
At 25 games, Newcastle set the single season record for consecutive games without a shut-out. Next stop Wimbledon's record of 26 spanning the 98/99 and 99/00 campaigns
West Ham United 0–2 Leeds United
The goal he scored against his old club only confirmed what an important trade Rio Ferdinand is already proving to be. Leeds have had a very average 6 wins, 4 draws, 5 losses without him this season but a 11-4-4 record when he is in the line-up. West Ham have had a 4-5-3 winning record with him, but a, less than a point a game, 5-7-11 record without.
