Go Figure - 11th February

After victories by the top teams and draws for Chelsea (40/1) and Leeds (50/1), the bookies have decided it is now a four-horse race. The table alongside indicates how the abilities of the championship leaders to take the lead and maintain will be of crucial importance in the run in.

One of the biggest shocks , this season, was when Bolton triumphed at Old Trafford, the first time Manchester United had lost a game at home in the Premiership after scoring first but their record in this situation is still pretty impressive. Their recuperative powers are not so strong but they won the 1995/6 championship in spite of winning none of the nine times they were scored on first

Liverpool' s shortcoming is clearly winning from behind, their sole victory occurring in the derby v Everton

Newcastle have the amazing record for a championship-challenging team of having conceded the first goal in more than half their games. QPR's 5th place in 1992/3 is the highest final position for a team with such a record. Fortuitously, the Magpies have a relatively good record under either circumstance, although will not be able to match Manchester United's 21wins,1 draw,0 losses for 1997/8 games in which they scored first

Arsenal are having a record breaking season. In spite of holding the all-time record (45) for Premiership no-score draws they have yet to be involved in one this season and indeed are currently sitting on a Premiership record run of 27 games in which they have scored. They remain unbeaten away from home - the 14 game run has set a single season record - but have won only five games at home, a figure equalled by relegation-probables, Derby County. However, it has been their inability to close out ganes they lead in which has kept them from the top. The average 1.88 points they achieve when playing catch-up is threatening the full-season record 1.62 set by Manchester United in 1999/00

Leeds have a shown a similar inability to maintain leads, indeed they have let slip two-goal advantages on occasion However, they are not so proficient from behind and, additionally, have been involved in four goalless draws, a figure matched by the other little-hopers, Chelsea

Go Figure    09-10 February
Aston Villa 1–1 Chelsea
Hasselbaink's tenth assist enables Chelsea to extend their unbeaten run at Villa Park to seven matches
Bolton Wanderers 1–0 West Ham United
Bolton end their winless run at 12, in line with the sequences of 11 and 12 they put up in their two previous trips to the top
Charlton Athletic 0–2 Manchester United
Solskjaer is now scoring at the rate of precisely one goal every two hours this season, but this lags both his teammate van Nistelrooy (103mins) and his own Premiership record (for scorers of at least 10 goals) of once every 72 minutes set in 1998/9
Derby County 0–1 Sunderland
New-signing, Robert Lee becomes the thirtieth player to appear for Derby this season, matching what was also the league-leading figure the team set last season
Everton 0–1 Arsenal
Although Leeds still lead with three such games, Arsenal's second match this season with at least five players cautioned enables them to move well clear in the bad-boy league; their 59 yellows and 6 reds putting them a total of nine clear of their closest challengers
Fulham 2–0 Blackburn Rovers
The third consecutive Premiership season in which Blackburn have a four game losing run. In contrast, only Manchester United have exceeded their mark of two seasons without incuring back-to-back losses
Ipswich Town 0–6 Liverpool
Ipswich really seem to have the death wish. Of the four teams that have previously suffered home defeats by six goals only Sheffield Wednesday survived relegation. It has been well documented that no team bottom at Christmas - as Ipswich were - have avoided the drop, but, in addition, earlier in the season, Town endured a 15 game winless spell and all four teams to incur such a run found themselves in the Nationwide within a few months
Middlesbrough 2–2 Leeds United
Nigel Martyn is stuck on 99 Premiership clean sheets for the fifth match running, his longest spell without a shutout since September 1999
Newcastle United 3–1 Southampton
Alan Shearer's twentieth goal since he turned 30 years of age but he still has a long way to catch Ian Wright who notched 93 as a veteran
Tottenham Hotspur 2–1 Leicester City
Dave (2 wins in last 36 as manager) Bassett appears unlikely to earn his relegation-avoidance bonus. Leicester are now 11 points from safety and no Premiership team has come back from more than the seven points adrift Southampton found themselves after picking up just one point in eight games at the start of the 1998/9 season
